BUSTOOOOOOOOOOO......

i've read that many successful players have gone broke several times before making it.

the first coupla yrs i played, i reloaded my accts constantly. that was until last year, which was a breakout year for me. i made several nice MTT cashes live and online. my cash game even reappeared strong toward the end of '06.

then, several things happened. i won't go off on a tangent listing them. basically, i withdrew a lot of money from my accts and Neteller for some "special" purchases. shortly after that, i became, "self employed" and i decided to give poker a go. but, i started at somewhat of a disadvantage. over 75% of my BR had been withdrawn.

my first 2 months were terrible. i got off to a horrible start trying to cash in on the Superbowl weekend frenzy. instead of doubling or tripling my BR, i got thoroughly worked. i went cold and really dug deep wondering if i could make it.

when March rolled around, i went on a tear , cashing over $5k in a little over a week's time. a very good month. my confidence was restored.

then here comes April, i resurrect my cash game and clean up in the 1st few sessions. playing like a nut peddling nit. then, the ass end of variance hit me. i dropped five (5) buy-ins at 2/4. moved down to 1/2 and dropped another (5) buy-ins.

so, i went back to playing MTT's and sng's. my bread and butter. i've gone 2 months now without any major MTT cashes. nothing over $1k.

running bad again.

early last week, i pulled out money to pay some bills and left only $200 in my Stars and FTP acct figuring i had a month to build it back up. i also had over $700 in Bodog. so, my thinking was just grind it out running sng's, satellites and MTT's thru June.

i set myself up for failure.

you can't expect to make $3-$4k a month with only a little over $1k in ur online bankroll. at least, i couldn't. i ran my Stars and FTP accts down to zero. but, still had $700 in Bodog.

i still had some money in my checking and a lot of $$$ in my money market. but, i've been trying to stay away from the $$$ in my money market. so, i have a cushion in case something bad happens.

when we got back from Cleveland Tuesday night, i tried to reload my FTP acct using my ATM/Check card. no luck. then, i tried to do the same on Stars. no luck there either. so i decided to use epassporte to load my accts. no go.

WTF ?? i've never had a problem loading any of those accts using my ATM/Check card before.

thank u Mr. Friske.

luckily i still have money on Bodog. i started thinking about Chris Ferguson's attempt to turn zero into $10k.

i have a TON of FPP's on FTP. so, i decided to play sum 1200 fpp single table turbo super sats into the $50+5 400k Satellite. i won two (2) seats yesterday. so, i have a chance to satellite into the 400k on Sunday. i also got $55 deposited into my acct for the 2nd seat. i played a bunch more. got HU a few times. but, couldn't close the deal.

today, I played a $6.50 token frenzy and won it. then, played a tier 2 single table turbo. when we got down to 3-handed, i purposely donked out in 3rd for the $66 payout.

this guy should take notes cuz, this is how u can build a BR from nothing.

i have $116 in FTP now and i'm off to grind some low stakes sng's on FTP. hopefully, i can get lucky on Sunday and win my seat into the 400k. i'm still playing the MTT's on Bodog that have a good overlay.

it's been a humbling experience. hopefully, something good will happen soon.

going back to Cali..

we're flying back from CLE in a few hrs. i played very little poker this weekend. the junk kicking continued. i'm running so bad, i skipped the Hoy altogether.

i'm gonna take some stabs at the bracelet races and satellites into the 100 seat Main Event Guarantee on Full Tilt over the next coupla weeks. more donations to the prize pools.
looking forward to some live satellites in Vegas when i'm not throwing back a few with the drunken blonkeys in a coupla weeks.

the Angels spanked NY this weekend, sweeping them in their house. we pwn those bitches.

i leave u with this....

WSOP

the 2007 WSOP is right around the corner and i haven't spent as much time as i have in the past coupla yrs trying to win my seat into the Main Event. Bodog has some $270 Qualifiers that run every few days you can satellite into for $27.

one (1) seat awarded in last night's $270 Qualifier (53 players) and 2nd place got $1250. there were no other payouts. it's kind of a long shot. but, i'm not willing to spend alot of money trying to get in this yr.

more o' the same...

i played sum low stakes sng's and token tourneys on FTP to "test" my luck before i tried some some bigger tourneys and got nada. i won't bore u with the details.

so, i close up shop there and move on to Bodog.

got past the 1st break of their 10k. but, never really got much going. i finally pushed my short stack in with KTo after an EP limper. he insta-calls with Ah7h. flop comes T-7-X rainbow. good news huh? ya that's what i thought. then, another 7 hit the river and i'm on the rail.

in the 5k, i got past the 1st break with an avg stack. then bleed some chips whiffing the flop a coupla times. with the blinds at 100/200 i push my $1800 chips all in with 99 and get two callers. one flips AQo and the other shows 33. time to triple up? no, a 3 hits the flop and i'm done. thought i was gonna get back in it there.

i take a break from the junk kicking until the 25k at 8:30pm EST ($40+4 buy-in). the tourney starts with 468 players. somehow, i get through the 1st 3 breaks with an above avg stack.

could this be the one ??

i take out a player with 88 vs. AJ. OMFG i won a coin flip! with 20k in chips, i pick up AQo. a player with half as many chips pushes. he's been pushing some marginal hands. so, i call. he flips KQo. a King hits the flop.

now, i have less than 10x the BB. blinds are at 600/1200. i pick up ATo the very next hand and push it all in in EP. i get called by a big stack who wakes up with AQ and his hand holds. i finish in 63rd place, 18 spots from the 1st payout.

we're flying back to Tina's homeland (CLE) tomorrow night. so, i probably won't get much playing time this weekend. it might be a blessing in disguise.

still riding the ass end of variance...

i've been playing the daily 10k/5k MTT's on Bodog (1pm/3pm EST, $30+3 buy-in) and have been getting deep the last coupla days. but, still no cash. yesterday, i started the 5k on a heater. but, then lost 4 races in a row and died 20 spots from the $$$. i really try to avoid racing off chips lately. cuz i can't seem to win coin flips, 60/40's or even 3-1 fav situations.

in today's 10k i get through about 3/4's of the field, pick up KK and reraise all in against a big stack who made a std raise in EP. he calls, flips AKo and spikes an Ace on the flop.

in Bodog's 5k, i picked up KK and QQ early. but, got no action. a maniac got moved to my table and started raising a lot of hands 6-8x preflop. i called a couple of his raises with good starting hands and had to check/fold the flop after i whiffed. eventually, i had to push in my short stack with KsTs after he limped in EP. he insta-calls with A-rag and i don't improve.

i finished 28th in the mOOk. after the 1st break, i lost about 1/3 of my stack with pocket 8's running into quads. then, i picked up AKo and pushed all my chips in after a player in EP went all in. he flips JJ and flops another Jack.

i played some tier 1/tier 2 token tourneys on FTP. i won a coupla tier 1's and a tier 2. then, decided to try a tier 3. in the tier 3, i picked up AK once and won a decent pot with a preflop raise/c-bet. then, went totaly card dead. i finally pushed A-rag into a button raiser and ran into pocket 9's.

after all that nonsense, i fired up bodog to play in some $15+1 turbos and a $25+2. no luck there. in my last $15+1 i open raised all in with 99 and was insta-called by a big stack to my left. he flips QhQs. flop comes 8s9sTs. i flop a set. but, it's all spades. the turn brings Js and my set is no goot against a straight flush.

in my $25+2 sng, i pick up AdTd and raise it 3.5x. some donkey who's been reraising with a lot of marginal hands, minreraises me. i push. he calls with KhJc. we both whiff the flop. turn brings a J, river another J and i'm out.

poker is really frustrating for me right now. i'm starting to feel like there's just too much luck involved. i don't see how my piss poor luck can continue for much longer. one leak i've noticed in my game is, i'm playing more passively in EP with good starting hands in a multi-way pot.

for example, i pick up KcQc in EP, raise it 3x and get two callers. flop comes Q-high. i bet half the pot and get 1 caller. i check the turn when a blank comes. my thinking here is, if he has AQ, he'll definitely bet there. he checks. Ace hits the river. i check. he makes a small bet and i call. he flips AJo.

if i bet the turn hard, he's gotta fold. i just don't like playing aggressively in EP with just a pair. it's something i need to work on.

anyway, i hope things turn around soon. cuz, i'm not looking forward to another day of disappointments.

still running cold....

i had some success on Bodog this weekend, winning some satellites and cashing in their daily 50k at 8:30pm EST. i also cashed in FTP's 18k on Friday night, finishing 35th. but other than that, i cannot seem to get much going on Full Tilt or Stars. i went cold playing the $15+1 single table turbos on Stars cashing only twice in my last 18 sng's. even the $22 turbo's on FTP went cold.

pathetic

the common theme in most of my tourneys or sng's is i cannot seem to win many races. i also, seem to pick up a good starting hand late in a tourney in LP (e.g AK or JJ) and end up running into a monster in the blinds (AA/KK). i died in last night's 18k running AK into the BB's KK after getting thru 2/3rd's of the field. i died in Bodog's 100k on Sunday running AJ from the button after it was folded to me into the BB's AK.

if any of you saw what happened to me in Don's Big Game, that's a good example of what i'm experiencing lately.

i chopped two pots as a 3-1 favorite, KsJs vs QJo and AKo vs AsTs. then, my final hand i lost a coin flip with JJ vs AhKh. i did gamble once after i whiffed the flop and win a race against Don with AQo vs JJ (he was mighty pissed). but, that was the only race i won. so, my race record last night was 1-1-2.

instead of having a HUGE stack after having to chop two pots as a 3-1 favorite, i end up having to push / pray with JJ vs AK and get knocked out on my ass.

'cuz we all know JJ sux ballz. just ask Don.

since i'm running so cold, i've been more selective of racing for chips. i passed on a race for half my stack before the 1st break of Don's Big Game when Fuel open / pushed from the cutoff. he had been pushing quite a bit. but, i went ahead and dumped my pocket 8's. I had over 4k in chips and it was too early for me to race that many chips. he showed Qh3h.

but, i still like my fold. he probably woulda flopped a flush on me.

on a more positive note, somehow i'm still in the top 10 of the BBT Leaderboard. i need to take down a couple of tourneys to even have a shot at the top spot.

don't forget to stop by and congratulate Hoyazo on his deep run in last nights FTOPS Main Event. He managed to hammer his way into the top 100 and finish the night with a nice cash for his efforts. wtg Hoy! you're on a heater.

more on sng/dubble shootout strategy...

i received a question from one of my readers and fellow blogger about how to play back at monkey pushing aggros (like me! :P) late in a dubble-shootout.

here's the scenario:

"2 nights ago I was playing an $11.70 double shootout for 2 guaranteed Sunday Millions seats on Stars and in my first shorthanded table (of 4 players) I crushed it in about five minutes then proceeded to wait an hour (non turbo, doh!) for the final table to roll around."

(smokkee: BTW this is one of the biggest reasons why i hate non-turbo dubble-shootouts)

"Once it started, I played my usual aggressive conservative game until the blinds increased and we lost one or two players, I managed to chip up and by the time we reached the payout-bubble (2 seats, 2 cashes) I was 3rd in chips and very comfortable. The bubble bursts and we lose the last short stack and 3-handed we're all pretty even in chipstacks, then one guy catches a card against me and the other guy in two consecutive hands to get a 2:1:1 chip lead. "

"This is when it got crazy. "

"Chip-leader raises absolutely every hand preflop (Lucko ??). If he's on the button, he's raising 6bb (which at this stage was considerable), if he's in the sb, he's shoving, if he's in the bb (and I was sb), if I call, he shoves, if I raise, he shoves, so I was forced to laydown marginal hands and my raisable hands got reshoved and I was faced with several tough decisions. "

"His range is obviously ATC for the raise/shove, there's no way he's
hitting premiums every hand, we know this for a fact - hands that I
could have made a stand with:
- A5 suited
- J7 suited
- K9 offsuit

Do you reshove his raise or call his all-in with any of these hands on
the bubble?"

my response:

> That guy played his big stack perfectly on the bubble. He put
> tremendous pressure on the other two stacks to gamble or blind out
> waiting for a monster. Most players are not comfortable calling off
> their stack with marginal hands. I would have def called his push
> with A-5 suited.
>
> But, the real key is putting pressure on the other shorty when you
> have a big stack to contend with. If you're 1st to act or Big stack
> folds, you push (not raise) ATC into the other shorty if he's in the
> BB. Big stack is not gonna call your push with crap and as you said
> the other guy was a folding machine (Blinders??).
>
> My CALLING range against a crap pusher is:
>
> Any pocket pair 55 and above
> 89, 9T and JT suited
> Any two broadway cards
> and any Ace

Bodog RAWKS

i've played a total of four (4) tourneys there and final tabled 3 now. two of those were the cheapie $2 rebuy. but, still.

all of the guaranteed tourneys i've seen running have an overlay. this one was short over 100 players. the overlay was $3220. their tournament structure is awesome with blinds starting at 5/10 and antes don't kick in until the 10th level.

i had the chip lead when we got down to two tables. but, lost over half my stack making a 60/40 call. some clown was pushing all his chips in when it was folded to him in LP. he donkey pushed with K5o on the button. i called with A7o in the BB and he caught 2p. you might think this is a questionable call. but, i was in a situation that was better than a coin flip and I was playing for the 1st place payout of $2750.

i deposited $100 there a coupla weeks ago and turned it into over $750 playing just 4 low buy-in tourneys. i'm gonna be spending more time on Bodog and less time taking redonkified beats on FTP.

EFF U FullTilt ! ! !

7even

1. my dad bought me my first car as soon as i turned 16, a red '66 Mustang GT. the catch was, i had to get a job to pay for insurance, gas and to pay him back. nobody rides for free. so, a friend of mine hooked me up with a job as a file clerk at a mail order company that sold pc's thru a quarterly catalog. we'd have to help fill, sort and mail the catalogs too. that part sucked tremendously. but, when we weren't doing catalogs we would crank up the radio and spit sunflower seeds all over the floor while we were filing. the receptionist would come in and bitch us out all the time. but, we didn't give a fuck. we'd just blast the radio, talk shit and spit shells all over the place for the cleaning crew to vacuum up. good times.

once i got my car, i'd ditch school to surf all the time. i barely passed with enough credits to finish high school. i think i had a C- avg. i hated school. all i wanted to do was hang with my friends, chase skirts and surf.

2. i used to drink and get high in jr. high school. my best friend would always have weed and we'd smoke out before home room. after we got high in his garage, we'd walk to school drinking vodka or whatever we could get our hands on. i'd get to home room totally stoned or drunk, sometimes both and somehow make it thru the day. i got busted shop lifting vodka from a local grocery store. the security guard nabbed me on my way out the door and called my parents. my dad picked me up and beat the livin' shit outta me. i'll never forget that day.

3. when i was 23 yrs old, i had worked my way from the file room into managing my own computer store. i had guys reporting to me who were twice my age. it was a little uncomfortable at first. but, once they realized i was a good mentor and motivator i got their respect. we'd have good times at the store too. we use to have a nerf football we'd toss around when it got slow. several times, a customer would walk in and see us throwing it across the store.

4. i ran my own business as a computer consultant for 5 yrs. after i got into pc networking, i realized i could make a lot more $$$ on my own. so, i waited for the right opportunity to come along and quit. my grandpa loaned me $10k to start up and i paid him back in a month. i made enough after my 1st deal to cover my expenses for 3 months and pay my grandpa back. he passed away a few yrs ago and i'll never forget him. he used to play cards with my mom and dad when we visited. my mom says the way i play reminds her of how my grandpa did. i guess he bluffed alot or he flopped the nutz all the time :)

5. i was married once before. i was 26 at the time and it seemed like the right thing to do. it lasted about 3yrs. but, it didn't work out. she was very clingy and needed alot of attn (i.e high maintenance). one day, i called my brother to tell him things weren't going well and asked if i could move in with him temporarily. the next day he showed up with his truck and i fit everything i cared about in the back. i left all the furniture and appliances just to make it easier for her. she wasn't happy. but, it was definitely a good decision for both of us. i haven't spoken to her since the divorce.

6. i went to game 7 of the 2002 World Series. this was the greatest sports experience of my life. me and my buddy bought tix to game 7 on ebay before game 6. the Giants were up 3-2 in the series and jumped out to a 5-0 lead in Game 6. it didn't look like we were gonna get to a game 7. then, the Angels made a miraculous comeback in the 7th inning and won the game 6-5. i was single, living in a studio apt in Newport Beach at the time. the whole complex was going nutz.

after that comeback, i knew the Halos had all the momentum and there was no way they were gonna lose that series. we got to the game super early to tailgate and mock the Giants during batting practice. while they were warming up in the outfield, i yelled out "you guys blew this series last night. there's no way you're gonna take this from us". the Angels went on to win game 7 and OC went off. other than maybe the Chargers winning the SuperBowl, i don't think i'll ever be that excited about my team winning a World Championship. Tina bought me a panoramic pic of the celebration on the field after the Angels won game 7. i look up at it everyday and it reminds me of how i felt that day.

7. my dad went thru open heart surgery last fall. he's almost 80yrs old and it was a very scary time for us. i never posted anything about it. but, it was definitely on my mind. he had to have some valves replaced. they told us there was a chance he might not get thru the surgery. i drove to the hospital that day to meet my mom and my brother and wait for him to come out of the O.R.

on the way to the hospital, i thought about all the good times we had together and how much he meant to me. it was a very difficult time for all of us. when he came out, he was on a respirator and completely unconcious. he did not look good. we visited every day and he doesn't remember any of our 1st few visits. he's had some minor complications since the surgery. but, luckily he got thru all of it ok.

i love u dad!

all that bitching worked! haha

whiney ass post

i am running rediculously bad on FTP this month. i spent most of my day friday trying to satellite into FTOPS Event #1. but, no luck. i took most of the day off on Saturday. but, i did manage to rush home from running errands with the little woman to play in the Gold freeroll. FTP pays out about a 3rd of the field and i didn't cash. i lost a coin flip with KdTd vs 4s4c.

that set the tone for the rest of my weekend.

i must've lost 70% of my races on FTP. at one point i lost 4 coin flips in a row, very discouraging. i got so tired of it i shut down Full Tilt, went to the jacuzzi and watched some NetFlix DVD's with Tina.

later, i played some $11 dubble shootouts on Stars and final tabled a couple. i couldn't take down the seat. but, i cashed $35 in each. lolz

Sunday i gave FTP another try. but, still no luck. i played some sats into Event #3. wudda freakin waste of time. i wasn't able to play the 18k all weekend. cuz, i couldn't even win a damn token frenzy.

so fuckin ghey.

anyway, this month is off to a bad start and i'm starting to think you gotta to be irish to win at this game.

Friday, May 11, 2007

it took me a few tries this time

i took another one of these down on the 4th try. made the final table in one i played prior to this. couldn't take down the $215 seat. but, i cashed $35 there. I took a bad beat HU in another one at the first table. still, a net over $200 after four $11 dubble shootouts. my sng strategy works well there. it doesn't hurt that the players are terribly bad.

tomorrow, i'll spend some time trying to satellite into FTOPS event #1. i final tabled a satellite today. but, lost a huge coin flip with AcKc vs 77 all-in preflop to finish a few spots short. i even turned the Ace. but, he rivered a 7.

in a bunch of my other sats, token tourneys and sng's i ran into a lot of overpairs when i had a good pocket pair. i musta ran JJ & QQ into KK /AA at least 4x today. i also ran KK into AA.

hopefully, i'll have better luck this weekend.

GL at the tables everyone!

how do u turn $11 into $200 ??

these $11.70 turbo dubble shootouts are ez pz. this is the 2nd one i've won this week and i've only played a handful.

i like to play them when we're short handed at the 1st table (70 players or less) and late at night (drunken donkery).

i don't plan on playin the PStars Million lottery tho. i've been selling the T$215 seats on www.tradewdollar.com for $208.55.

back 2 grindin' sng's

i've been spending more time at the $22 single table turbos on FTP lately. the play is pretty bad. even this guy took one down on his first try.

could u possibly need any more evidence then that?

this is my sng strategy and it's pretty reliable. play super-mega tight until u get down to the last 5 players. obv, u have to pick a hand to gamble with if u get short on chips before that. but most importantly, you want to be the player initiating the action. raise or push when it's folded to u. preferably, in LP.

my starting hand requirements before we get short-handed are AQ or AK and any pocket pairs 99 or higher. i will come out raising 4x preflop with those hands and c-bet the flop in the early blind levels. like i said, super tight. the blinds are cheap early on and it's not worth it to gamble. let other players donk out playing marginal shit. you'd be surprised how fast u can get short-handed in a turbo sng.

when we get down to 5 players, that's when the fun begins.

it's push or fold time and my starting hand requirements open up. if i have folding equity, i'm willing to push ATC from the button into players in the blinds if it's folded to me. if i'm a big stack, i pick on the middle stacks. i don't bet into shortys unless i'm willing to call their push. you're better off putting them all in preflop then raising 3x-4x. you'll probably be committed to call their push anyway.

every so often, you'll get caught pushing with crap on the bubble and sometimes you'll call off your chips with a "real" hand from a crap pusher and take a bad beat. that's gonna happen. but, most of the time, players in the blinds have crap hands they can't call a push with. so, u pick up blinds building your stack for 3-handed play past the bubble to take a shot at 1st.

anyway, it's a pretty straight-forward strategy. i call it no brainer poker and the races are fun to watch.

:D

on a freezer

i played a TON of poker this weekend. mostly, on FTP. although it is one of my fav online poker sites, i've been cold decked the last coupla weeks there.

i've been playin the $14 token frenzy for the $75 token twice a day and until last night, could not get over the hump. i don't play the 18k (my fav guaranteed tournament) if i can't win a $75 token. i figure if i'm running that bad, why bother?

so last night, i finally won a freakin token frenzy and registered for the 18k at 12am EST. i got thru about 2/3rd of the field and this is how i died in 123rd place (327 players).

a BIG stack limps UTG, another guy calls on the button and i check my BB with 8c-Ts (the mOOk).

flop comes:
6h7h9h

i flop a straight. but, it's all hearts. since there's a miniscule chance someone flopped a flush (118-1), there's really no way i'm not trying to get all my chips in at this point to try to protect my hand and let sum fish call off all his chips chasing the 4-flush.

i bet out, BIG stack smooth calls and guy on the button (short stacked) pushes. so, i push over the top all-in. BIG stack calls with 5h2h. shorty has the Ah. so, i'm drawing dead and IGHN.

i won't go into a bunch of other stoopid situations i've been in. but, this is how the last coupla week's have gone for me on FTP.

i qualified for their WSOP Main Event 2-seat freeroll and finished 8th. i came into the final table as one of the short stacks. picked up the tourist (A7o) and jam. some guy in the SB wakes up with the Hoy (AJo) and I die 6 spots away from the promised land.

i fired up Pstars, played a few $11.70 double shootouts to the Sunday million and took one down. i didn't play it tho. i sold the seat for $208.55 to www.tradewdollar.com. the play in these low-buyin double shootouts is horrendous.

in Sunday's $650 WSOP Qualifier on Stars, i got past the 1st break with about $1800 in chips. picked up QQ and ran it into KK. that was that.

this guy has been mentioning some of the overlays on Bodog's tournaments. so, i fired it up made a $100 deposit and gave it a go.

i played their $2r last night to refamiliarize myself with the software and finished 3rd outta almost 200 players for a $120 cash.

i more than doubled my BR there after just one tournament :D

it was a lot of fun to play a low stakes tourney. the play is miserably bad. i ended up getting all in preflop with A-rag on a resteal. got called by QTo and he rivered a straight. 2nd paid $200 and 1st place payout was $300.

i'm probably gonna give one of their dubble stack tourneys a go today or tomorrow.

Blonkey Poker Inflation

the cost to see a flop in a blonkey tournament just went up. 4x raises are no longer sufficient to push out crap like Q9o preflop.

it's gonna be 6x-8x preflop when i'm at the table from now on. so, if u kids wanna try to outflop me and hit the lotto.

GL

3x reraises are not enuf to let someone know their QQ is not good. so, from now on....

i'm ALL-IN with my AA or KK.

if u wanna try and suckout a 2-3 outer,

GL

i'm not gonna wait around for premium hands just to get blonkeypunched.

that is all.
