BUSTOOOOOOOOOOO......

i've read that many successful players have gone broke several times before making it.

the first coupla yrs i played, i reloaded my accts constantly. that was until last year, which was a breakout year for me. i made several nice MTT cashes live and online. my cash game even reappeared strong toward the end of '06.

then, several things happened. i won't go off on a tangent listing them. basically, i withdrew a lot of money from my accts and Neteller for some "special" purchases. shortly after that, i became, "self employed" and i decided to give poker a go. but, i started at somewhat of a disadvantage. over 75% of my BR had been withdrawn.

my first 2 months were terrible. i got off to a horrible start trying to cash in on the Superbowl weekend frenzy. instead of doubling or tripling my BR, i got thoroughly worked. i went cold and really dug deep wondering if i could make it.

when March rolled around, i went on a tear , cashing over $5k in a little over a week's time. a very good month. my confidence was restored.

then here comes April, i resurrect my cash game and clean up in the 1st few sessions. playing like a nut peddling nit. then, the ass end of variance hit me. i dropped five (5) buy-ins at 2/4. moved down to 1/2 and dropped another (5) buy-ins.

so, i went back to playing MTT's and sng's. my bread and butter. i've gone 2 months now without any major MTT cashes. nothing over $1k.

running bad again.

early last week, i pulled out money to pay some bills and left only $200 in my Stars and FTP acct figuring i had a month to build it back up. i also had over $700 in Bodog. so, my thinking was just grind it out running sng's, satellites and MTT's thru June.

i set myself up for failure.

you can't expect to make $3-$4k a month with only a little over $1k in ur online bankroll. at least, i couldn't. i ran my Stars and FTP accts down to zero. but, still had $700 in Bodog.

i still had some money in my checking and a lot of $$$ in my money market. but, i've been trying to stay away from the $$$ in my money market. so, i have a cushion in case something bad happens.

when we got back from Cleveland Tuesday night, i tried to reload my FTP acct using my ATM/Check card. no luck. then, i tried to do the same on Stars. no luck there either. so i decided to use epassporte to load my accts. no go.

WTF ?? i've never had a problem loading any of those accts using my ATM/Check card before.

thank u Mr. Friske.

luckily i still have money on Bodog. i started thinking about Chris Ferguson's attempt to turn zero into $10k.

i have a TON of FPP's on FTP. so, i decided to play sum 1200 fpp single table turbo super sats into the $50+5 400k Satellite. i won two (2) seats yesterday. so, i have a chance to satellite into the 400k on Sunday. i also got $55 deposited into my acct for the 2nd seat. i played a bunch more. got HU a few times. but, couldn't close the deal.

today, I played a $6.50 token frenzy and won it. then, played a tier 2 single table turbo. when we got down to 3-handed, i purposely donked out in 3rd for the $66 payout.

this guy should take notes cuz, this is how u can build a BR from nothing.

i have $116 in FTP now and i'm off to grind some low stakes sng's on FTP. hopefully, i can get lucky on Sunday and win my seat into the 400k. i'm still playing the MTT's on Bodog that have a good overlay.

it's been a humbling experience. hopefully, something good will happen soon.

GL at the tables this weekend!

Hang in there smoke, just keep playing well and good things will happen to you. You are right though, you committed bank roll suicide..... You have to have a pretty big roll to be an MTT player. Even SNGs you should probably have 50-100 buy ins to your favorite sit n go level.

Hey Ray!!!

I'm totally looking forward to seeing you guys too. I love it that you are staying at the Stratosphere. I have awesome memories of that place, it's reasonable, they have a nice little tournament if you are ever around at 8 or midnight. I've placed in the money a few times so you know it's SOFT if I place in it!

I'm going to write to Tina, but hopefully her and I can sneak away for a few hours and do some girly stuff - go shopping or lay out at the pool!

Awesome post even though its not what we all want to hear.

You got the skills to make it Ray, keep grinding and don't get down on yourself.

I got stuck in a rut playing online for sheer convenience sake and since I've been back playing live I can't believe I let my laziness overcome my want for money.

I'd suggest mixing in a few live sessions over at Oceans 11 to keep the feel of live play. Who knows it might break that slump you're in. I'd also tell you to don't lose your aggression at the cash tables, nit is not your style and you lose some edge playing that way.

Hang tough man, learn the lessons, and you'll be back to making money in no time.

everyone runs bad and goes broke...i've been broke a half dozen times doing exactly the same thing you did.

i thought the same thing that i could just withdraw a big chunk of my roll and everything would be ok...

all of the best lessons are learned the hard way and if you can take this as a learning experience you'll come back as a better player because of it.

I echo Don's comments that although this isn't what we want to read, it's a great post and a very real outlook on what life as a poker player is like. Especially someone focusing mainly on tournaments. I have had so many cashes where I said to myself I'm never going to have to deposit again into these sites, but basically every time I've found myself redepositing at some point to all the sites I play a lot at. It's just too few and far betwee for the large cashes when you're focusing primarily on mtt's.

I don't know about your cash games because I haven't really ever seen you in action, but I know that when you play right and get on a roll, you are a top-quality mtt player. I am sure you are due for another big score soon if you just keep playing your game. And I look forward to reading all about it right here.

I think we have a perfect time for a Waffles vs. Smokkee rebuild the bank roll challenge!

It is of course a shame it has happened but variance can do us all in and you have already begun the trek of turning nothing into something.

Bad lucky, smokkee. I've been on hard times recently too, after I reloaded and luckily won the MATH, I steadily wore my $474 win down to the region of $100+ before I took 4th in the $4.5k guarantee to boost me back up to $770.
After a mere week of play and utterly ridiculous suckouts/bad beats on Full Tilt, I'm hovering around the $650 mark with 2 tokens in tow... but I know that without the occasional MTT score to keep me afloat, I'm not a consistently winning SNG player... so I'm tempted to consider cash but sometimes I go through bouts of extreme impatience at the table and feel more in the mood for the play on the turbos.
Anyway, that aside, since you're a proven SNG grinder and MTT casher, I imagine you're just travelling through a gully of variance and are hopefully about to come out the other end smelling of roses.
Best of luck.
